For the first time, Larkin Gallery is pleased to present oil paintings by artist and cartoonist John Andert. Andert's quirky, openly humanistic, and soulful portrayals of life's characters are vibrant, expressive and full of instinctive humor.
Andert's fine art style has evolved from his locally acclaimed comicstrip, Washashores, that has been published in Provincetown for nearly three decades.
These new works initiate a thoughtful smile and a relatable vulnerability to the viewer.
Artist John Andert lives and works in Easthampton, Massachusetts. Working in media ranging from graphite and ink to gouache, acrylic, and oil, his practice spans cartooning, illustration, and fine art painting.
Originally from St. Louis, much of John’s formal training was in theater. But his absolute earliest memory is of laying on the kitchen floor coloring on the scratch pads his grandmother brought home from her job at the printer. He has been drawing ever since.
In April 1986, John came from NYC to Provincetown just for the summer. He wound up staying 31 years. It was here, while waiting tables and working behind the counter at Lemba’s Health Foods, that he began to reconnect with his visual art. Among other venues, John showed regularly as a member of Provincetown Art Association and Museum and was a featured artist at Gallery Matrix.
In 1997, John submitted several single panel cartoons to the Provincetown Banner. The newspaper’s then editor, Hamilton Kahn, came back and said the Banner already had an excellent editorial cartoonist (Howie Schneider). But what they were really looking for was an ongoing comic strip - the only requirement being that it be set in Provincetown. And, with that, John’s cartoon “Washashores” debuted on March 19, 1997. It has been in production ever since.
John initially maintained workspace in the homes he shared with his life partner and husband, playwright Sinan Ünel. He later rented a studio space on the 3rd floor of Whalers’ Wharf for many years. In the fall of 2017, John and Sinan moved from Provincetown to western Mass. Shortly thereafter, John found a studio at One Cottage St. in Easthampton.
