Thomas Antonelli (1952-2019)
The beach, that elemental, simple word that speaks to the rhythm of life, the ebb and flow of the tides, the place we go to play in the surf, bask in the sun, watch the sun rise in the morning, the setting sun at dusk. It’s where we go to contemplate the meaning of life, where we take time to clear our minds, settle our disquiet and listen to our inner voices. These paintings by the late Provincetown artist Thomas Antonelli celebrate the place that he loved so much, where he lived so fully: the beach. Tom loved to swim, worshipped the sun and learned to breathe in sync with the tides. His painting flowed from him, through him, as the waves brush the sand. Each forward stroke and return recalls the rhythm of the waves, the tides. The simplicity of line and form, the richness of color and the honest, forthright and often quite bold expression tell us what Tom so eloquently shares with us in his work: his joyful celebration of life, love, the life force of water, of the sea.
